Marching to the Beat of a Youthful Drum

Find Other Jewish Singles Online

Online dating is something that I never thought that I would do. When I was younger, I had no problem finding dates, but now that I am in my thirties, it is getting harder and harder to find someone to date. And if I do, my mother doesn’t like them because they aren’t Jewish. I finally decided that I would look online to see there was anyone else like me who wanted to date within the Jewish religion. My only other option was to have my mother set me up with someone she liked, and I didn’t see how that could turn out well.

It didn’t take long for me to find websites where I knew I would be able to find other Jewish singles. To my surprise there were many sites dedicated to helping people like me find dates. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but I knew it was something that I had to do if I wanted to meet someone new. Really, the hardest part was just answering questions about me.

It didn’t take long to get messages from other singles who were interested in a date. I was surprised by this, but it was a pleasant surprise. After talking with a few of them for a while, I went out a couple dates. I don’t know that I will be dating any of them for the long term, but it was nice to meet some new people and I look forward to meeting more people through Jewish online dating.

Get Back to Your Jewish Roots

Are you teaching your child about Jewish Roots? Wanting a little more to do than just reading to them and telling stories and such. Want a way that they can visualize what they are learning and maybe they will have a better understanding of their Jewish roots. Take a trip.

Earlier this year in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the Jewish Children’s Museum opened up with a new interactive exhibit. This interactive exhibit provides lessons in the history of the Jewish people.

This project took five years and 7 million dollars to complete but worth it. The Museum’s director said that seeing the children run around, touching and feeling things, seeing things with the aid of high tech gear make the Jewish history come to life.

You can take a voyage through time from Abraham and Sarah’s tent to King David’s harp built with strings made from beams of colored lights. How about a water race that teaches the children about the seven fruits of the Old Testament.

Another outstanding feature to the exhibit is the replica of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. This wall is where the Jewish people place prayer notes on the wall. This replica is there just for that too, you too can place notes with prayers on them and the director of the museum has said that all placed on the wall will be sent to Israel.

The museum is for children of all Jewish backgrounds as well as non-observant families. This has also be a great aid in non-observant families to see the history and traditions of observant Jews. This is a way for them to view the differences in what they see and what they do; asking parents questions about their own observance.

The Basics of Web Design

If you are the owner of a website or are considering starting a web site, then you are probably familiar with web design. Even if you don’t know much about how to design a web page, you most likely understand the importance of having a visually appealing, informative, and interesting web design for your page. There are many ways to go about achieving this and to ensure that your web page looks great!

Web Design is accomplished when a web page designer uses either a type of coding or a software program to go through and design their page. They add the elements that they want to and even can edit the order, the size, the font, the font color, the background color and the images that are included. The most popular type of web design code language is HTML. Using this type of coding, users can use certain tags to make their page elements appear the way that they want.

For other users who aren’t quite a technologically advanced, there are many programs out there that will design your page for you using HTML but without you ever having to enter any code yourself. For example, it is set up in an extremely user friendly format that looks similar to a word processing document. You can click to add text and then simply highlight the text and select your desired font color. It makes the page appear the way that you want by using HTML code, but you never have to actually input or edit the code yourself.

Web Design is growing and changing daily. It is an exciting field full of new opportunities.

Sleep More to Look Younger

The amount of sleep you get has always been directly related to your health and well being. Research always shows that people who get the right amount of sleep are healthier and happier. Our bodies are made to need a certain amount of sleep to keep our body working and functioning the way it should. Doctors have always said that in order to feel rested and in better health, you need 8 hours of sleep a night. Some people are realizing that sleep is also a way to look younger. Everyone wants to look younger and more vibrant especially as they age. Many people will buy products to make them look younger but really they just need more sleep.

Sleep more to look younger… this is the key. Our bodies need down time to rest and to refresh our cells and even our minds. Sleeping is the key to not only feeling younger but to looking younger as well. Our bodies need that time to replenish and rejuvenate while we sleep. This is important because our skin is also something that replenishes itself as you are in a restful state. What better way to look younger than for your skin to look refreshed and new?

In this day and age we are so busy and may not get 8 hours of sleep a night very often. It may not seem that it is affecting you during the time but it will start to wear on you and your body. This will definitely cause you to look older and feel older as well. Getting enough sleep is important for you to stay young and look young as you age.

Enjoy Fitness for Life

When Jack La Lane died this past January he was 96 years old, but physically he looked half that age. A life time of exercise and proper nutrition helped him to avoid many of the pitfalls of aging and he regularly exhorted people to work out and eat well. He started the first Health Club in America and had the first exercise show on television.

His basic plan was very simple. He believed that people needed to eat healthy food that were not processed or filled with chemicals. He also believed that exercise provided strength and endurance that allowed him and many others to avoid the physical deterioration that ensues with aging.

His fitness plan included eating low fat, low sugar unprocessed foods in small quantities twice a day coupled with strength training and aerobic activity such as walking and swimming. Many of the ideas he advocated have been backed up by modern medicine and are endorsed by the president’s Council on physical Fitness, the American Heart Association, and numerous other organizations.

He believed that there were no quick fixes to maintaining good health and fitness and only by eating right, taking vitamins and doing a well-balanced workout routine would people be able to live healthy fit lives until their 90’s or beyond. He explained his philosophy in the following quote from a book by Dr. Andrew Siegel: “Living is a pain in the butt. Dying is easy. It’s like an athletic event. You’ve got to train for it. You’ve got to eat right. You’ve got to exercise. Your health account, your bank account, they’re the same thing. The more you put in, the more you can take out. Exercise is king and nutrition is queen: together, you have a kingdom.”

A Life Changing Discovery

I am a shy person. Even though I love going playing poker, I have always been terrified of the idea of going to the casinos. They are so crowded. I could swear that someone is always staring at me. I cannot concentrate on what the cards mean. So instead of playing poker, I end up holed up in my kitchen and playing solitaire.

Then one day, I saw a commercial that changed my whole life. The commercial encouraged me to download William hill casino. Normally I do not give much credence to commercials especially the ones that are played in the middle of the night, but something about this called to me.

Telling myself that I was being silly, I turned on my computer and ran a quick check. The things that I discovered sill boggle my mind. Simply by typing in the phrases best poker sites and online casino into my favorite search engine, I found a world I never knew existed. The online casinos were located all over the world, and I could play at any of the ones that I wanted.

I do not know how many hours I spent staring at my computer screen that night. Since I am not a trusting person I was not going to just download virgin casino and start playing poker. I wanted to make sure that the casinos were safe to use. I read online casino reviews until my eyes felt like they were about to bleed. I learned that not only were many of the casinos safe, but, provided I won, I could actually make some really good money playing in some of the online poker tournaments. When I began to read the UK casino reviews I discovered that a major part of the British culture is being able to play bingo online.

After doing a great deal of research, I took the plunge and registered to play. I am still the same shy person I have always been, but now I feel like I have a life. Not only do I get to play all the poker I want, I am also experimenting with other games. Yesterday I tried my hand at bingo, and today I am going to see if I am going to try playing free blackjack online. The day after that I might really get crazy and try playing online strip poker.

7 Hybrid Cars: Will They Save You Money On Gas?

When Nissan (OTC: NSANY) announced that it would launch its “Leaf” electric car in the U.S. in 2010, the media was abuzz with renewed interest in a zero-emissions car. Nissan’s new car, along with the proposed introduction of other all-electric cars such as the Mitsubishi (OTC:MMTOF) MiEV and the Volvo C30 in the near future, it looks like electric cars may be becoming a more practical reality. However, although experts predict the tipping point toward zero-emissions vehicles may be approaching, there are some practical considerations that are keeping these cars on the margins, including low top speeds, slow acceleration, limited range and the time it takes to recharge them. (For more on the hybrid debate, see .)
In Pictures: Top 10 Green Industries
For those who want a greener commute, the most practical existing option is still hybrid vehicles, which combine gas with electric battery power. There are a number of these vehicles on the market and most of them use significantly less fuel than a comparable non-hybrid car. Unfortunately, at their elevated cost, that doesn’t make them cheaper to drive in most cases. Oil and gas industry analysts aren’t predicting a rise in oil prices just yet, but if you’re set on buying a hybrid, whether for the environment, your pocketbook or as a hip accessory, read on to find out which cars will provide the most value over a comparable non-hybrid model and how long it will take before you start getting more value out of your hybrid at current national average gas prices.

Nissan Altima Hybrid – Years to Break Even on Fuel Savings: 21
Car testers approve of the Nissan Altima nearly unanimously; Consumer Reports named it one of its top picks for 2010 and JD Power & Associates named it the highest-ranked mid-sized car in initial quality. Testers noted that the Altima hybrid was similar – but they didn’t fail to note that most consumers would have a hard time getting one (they’re only available in eight states) and the fuel savings were less-than-spectacular considering its premium price.
With an average yearly fuel cost of about $1,587 at current gas prices, the hybrid version only saves an Altima driver $326 per year. With a more than $6,000 discrepancy between the Altima Hybrid sticker price and the price for a comparable four-cylinder gas-powered Altima, it will take an owner 21 years to recoup the difference on gas prices alone.

Toyota Prius – Years to Break Even on Fuel Savings: 20
There’s little doubt that this darling of the hybrid industry is a great car. Consumer Reports chose the Toyota (NYSE:TM) as one of the best picks for environmentally friendly vehicles and one of the best value vehicles for 2010. A lot of this value stems from its outstanding reliability, however the price of the Prius has been a sticking point for true value-oriented buyers, who can get more value out of other small, non-hybrid vehicles. For our purposes, we compared the Prius in price and fuel efficiency to the Toyota Yaris. Although the Prius is certainly a more luxurious car than the Yaris and tends to get higher scores for performance, if you want to drive the most cost-effective Toyota, the Prius just isn’t it.
Although the Prius does use more than $500 less gas than a Yaris at current prices, it also costs between $22,000 and $28,000, far more than the Yaris’ $12,605 base-model price – and far more than most other similar sized, fuel-efficient sedans and hatchbacks.

Honda Civic Hybrid – Years to Break Even on Fuel Savings: 17
The Honda (NYSE:HMC) Civic Hybrid can’t boast the outstanding 51 mile per gallon fuel economy the Toyota Prius gets in the city, but it costs nearly as much, retailing for $23,800. That’s a long way from its non-hybrid counterpart, which starts at $16,000. US News & World Report may have ranked Honda’s hybrid as No.4 on its list of most affordable cars for 2010, but that still put this fuel-efficient version two spots behind its fuel-burning sibling, the Honda Civic, which ranked higher as a result of its much lower price. The hybrid version will save the average driver about $460 per year, which means it’ll take 17 years to recoup the nearly $8,000 premium for the hybrid model.

Honda Insight – Years to Break Even on Fuel Savings: 16.5
The Honda Insight was groundbreaking in that it was the first hybrid to hit the North American market in 1999, beating the Prius by several months. But although it’s probably the least expensive hybrid out there – it retails for $21,300 – most reviews of the car noted that comfort and refinement were sacrificed. Consumer Reports called it one of the worst Hondas it had rated in a long time, and notoriously outspoken U.K. auto journalist Jeremy Clarkson called it “biblically awful”.

The Insight’s engine produces a paltry 98 horsepower but uses slightly more fuel than the Prius, which delivers considerably more pep with its 134-horsepower engine. With a $5,600 premium over the Honda Fit, it would take an Insight driver 16.5 years to break even on the gas savings alone. Plus, most testers much preferred the Fit’s driveability, style and versatility.

Toyota Camry Hybrid – Years to Breakeven: 15
The non-hybrid Camry has been one of the best-selling and highest-rated cars in its class for years and by most accounts, the hybrid is pretty good too. U.S. News & World Reports described it as more comfortable and refined than the Prius – it’s also roomier and has considerably more power (187 horsepower to the Prius’ 134 horses). That said, at $26,400 the hybrid Camry costs nearly $6,000 more than a comparable non-hybrid, and only provides about $300 per year savings on gas (at current prices). As such, it would take you 15 years to break even on this car over the cost of its non-hybrid counterpart. However, if you’re looking to buy a hybrid for its cachet, rather than for cost-effectiveness, the Camry Hybrid looks to be a sensible choice.

Mercury Milan Hybrid – Years to Breakeven: 13
The Milan Hybrid is new for 2010 and reviewers are loving its combination of luxury, fuel efficiency and performance, which apparently is nearly indistinguishable from a non-hybrid. It’s a practical mid-sized car that provides entry-level luxury features, such as leather seats and satellite navigation systems. And, although it cost $6,300 more than a comparable non-hybrid Milan, the hybrid’s ability to get 41 miles per gallon in the city far surpasses its gas-greedy counterpart’s 22 mpg rating, allowing a typical driver to save nearly $500 per year on gas and break even on those savings within 13 years.

Ford Fusion Hybrid – Years to Breakeven: 5.6
What do you get when you combine a Ford (NYSE:F) Fusion with an electric motor and nickel hydride battery pack? According to Consumer Reports, the answer is the “crown jewel” of the Fusion family and a very cost-effective hybrid vehicle. This could account for why it took home top honors as the North American Car of Year at the Detroit Auto Show. It provides a similar look and driving experience as the non-hybrid Fusion, but because the price discrepancy between the two models is relatively slim (about $3,200), drivers are likely to break even with the money they save in gas within six years. If fuel prices go up, the Ford Fusion hybrid is likely to be a very cost-effective choice. (Learn about the founder of the Ford Motor Company and how he influenced the auto industry in Henry Ford: Industry Mogul And Industrial Innovator.)

The Bottom Line
Although most hybrid cars can get you around on considerably less gas, at current gas prices, most of them just aren’t cheap enough to make this the sole consideration when deciding between a traditional or hybrid model. If you’re betting that oil prices will go up – or you just want to reduce your carbon footprint regardless of the cost – you might want to take the plunge to hybrid driving. If you don’t have the extra cash, consider choosing a small, fuel-efficient car. It won’t have the hybrid cachet, but it’ll get you around at a much lower price.

Investors to buy 213.9 mln oz silver in 2010-CPM

NEW YORK, May 11 (Reuters) – Investors bought 209.7 million ounces of silver last year, the second highest in history, and silver’s strong appeal as both a precious and industrial metal will lift demand further in 2010, according to an industry report issued Tuesday.

Global Markets

Uncertainties after the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression and a subsequent economic recovery boosted silver fabrication and investment demand in 2009, metals research firm CPM Group said in its Silver Yearbook 2010.

“Silver has definitely benefited strongly from the economic woes of the world,” Jeffrey Christian, managing director of CPM Group, told Reuters in an interview before the release of the report.

“Investors are looking at silver and saying: It’s a good buy because I can buy it as a safe haven like gold, and if the economy does get better, it’s an industrial play,” Christian said.

Investment buying in silver is expected to reach 213.9 million ounces in 2010, CPM Group said.

Total fabrication demand, which includes jewelry and silverware, photography, electronics and batteries, totaled 616.4 million ounces in 2009, and is expected to rise 2.4 percent to 631.2 million ounces this year.

Christian cited strong industrial demand from electronics and flat-screen display panels due to the global recovery.

Solar panels, which consume only a small amount of silver, could help drive silver fabrication demand because of their growing popularity amid calls to cut down on fossil fuel consumption, he said.

Mine production climbed 0.3 percent to 553.9 million ounces in 2009, and is expected to rise about 5 percent to 581.2 million ounces.

CPM Group said that Peru was the largest silver producer at 123.9 million ounces in 2009, followed by Mexico.

On price outlook, Christian said that silver could range between $15 and $21 an ounce for the rest of 2010, and he added that silver’s low at $14.63 in February “may well be the low of the year.”

However, he said that the metal, which is traditionally more volatile than gold, could still retreat if interest rates rise.

“My expectation is that Treasury rates will rise sharply. When that happens, depending on the economic environment, you can see investors walk away from silver as they have done in the past,” Christian said. (Reporting by Frank Tang; Editing by John Picinich)

If you are a gold/silver kook, you should read this

For you goldbugs out there, today may be a very good opportunity to buy CEF. They just announced their intention to buy more gold and silver for their fund. This happens only a few times a year at most.

When it does happen the price of CEF drops dramatically in comparison to gold and silver (as you can see from today’s price moves.) The NAV per share is still the same after the purchase but the premium (CEF is a closed end fund) drops due to the offering.

Anyways, it’s an extremely good bet that the premium will rebound after a short period of time. This gives you the opportunity to be long gold and silver while getting a little extra kick from an increasing premium.

DISCLOSURE: I am currently long CEF and short SLV and GLD until the premium rebounds.

U.S. Silver Reports First Quarter 2010 Production

TORONTO, May 11, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — US Silver Corporation /quotes/comstock/11v!e:usa (CA:USA 0.20, +0.01, +5.26%) (“US Silver” or “the Company”) is pleased to announce first quarter, 2010 production of silver, lead and copper from the Galena mine in Wallace, Idaho, U.S.A. All dollar amounts are in U.S. dollars.

Silver production in the month of March 2010 was the highest monthly production achieved since U.S. Silver purchased the Galena Mine. Silver production for the quarter was the second highest ever recorded by the Company.

         PRODUCTION DATA S L C ilver ead opper (ounces) (pounds) (pounds)——————————- ——– ——— ——–First quarter 2010 635,161 1,467,449 249,214——————————- ——– ——— ——–First quarter 2009 634,791 1,057,647 301,120——————————- ——– ——— ——–2010 over 2009 percent increase +0.0% +38.7% -17.2%——————————- ——– ——— ——–

Using metals prices of $16/oz. for silver, $0.95/lb. for lead and $3.25/lb. for copper, equivalent ounces of silver produced totaled 772,913 ounces in the quarter. The average realized price of silver sold during the quarter was $17.74 per ounce.

Unaudited cash cost per silver ounce produced was $12.59. The primary causes for the higher costs were increased rail and drift repair, additional rock bolting and timbering to repair damage from seismic activity that occurred in December 2009 and short-term production delays caused by the completion of the Galena shaft rehabilitation project.

The Galena shaft rehabilitation was substantially completed with the final concrete poured in mid-March. Some additional time was required to transition from the concrete lining to the existing timber sets just below the 3200 level. There are now 830 vertical feet of concrete shaft that will require minimal maintenance in the future. Completion also provides direct access to the 3400 level and allows resumption of mining in the higher grade stopes above that level. Work in the Galena shaft later this year will include the rehabilitation of four loading pockets and the purchase of new aluminum skips to enable ore hoisting up the Galena shaft, something that has not been done since 1990.

The Company is pleased that there were no lost time injuries during the quarter.

The Company also announces that its Annual General Meeting will be held in Toronto on June 29, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at the offices of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, Suite 1600, 1 First Canadian Place, 100 King Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Finding a Good Bingo Game Online

Would you like to play online bingo but haven’t yet joined in due to concerns about finding a good, safe bingo game online? There are plenty of good, safe bingo sites to play and by doing a little research, you will be able to relax and play without security and safety concerns.

Just what is online bingo anyway? It is bingo, just like you would play at the local hall, only played online. The only real difference is that numbers are chosen by a random number generator instead of a person drawing them from a mixing cage. Online bingo has the same rules as traditional bingo and the winners get prizes such as rewards, points or cash. Many players feel online bingo is superior to traditional bingo because there are larger prizes and free bonuses and you don’t have to leave home to play.

The best way to learn about legitimate online bingo sites is to use a bingo review website. Bingo review websites do the work for you; they provide information that allows the player to decide which sites are best to play. A good bingo review site provides the reader with tips, news, articles, blogs, safety and security information, as well as reviews of particular bingo sites. Review sites are the ultimate tool for comparing bingo websites such as Posh Bingo and learning what is good and bad about each.

For online bingo players concerned about the security of online play and the safety of their personal information, review websites provide the information to make the best site choice.

The Newest in Online Bingo Websites

Are you among the ever increasing population that just loves to play bingo online? Well, you are definitely not alone if you answered yes. Online bingo has experienced a huge growth spurt over the past couple years and this phenomena shows absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Those online bingo players that have enjoyed the game for several years probably have a few of their favorite bingo websites that they frequent. But most online bingo players usually like to mix it up a little bit. So, how do these people go about finding out about a new bingo site? Well, most seasoned online bingo players probably have an online bingo review website that they frequent to keep up to date on bingo promotions and new UK online bingo sites that are available.

Have you ever played bingo on the tea and bingo website? This is one new bingo website that is receiving rave reviews from the online bingo community. There are some great reviews written about this site from bingo players that know a good bingo website when they see one.

Maybe you are looking for a bingo website that has a reputation for being a nodeposit bingo website. On these Budget Bingo types of websites, you can try out the games before making your initial deposit. Many seasoned bingo players will do this before they ever make a deposit on a bingo website. After all, you want to make sure that you like playing on a given website before you deposit money.

There are actually several free bingo sites available to play on too. On most of the free bingo websites, you can still win prizes or even cash. Reduce Your Impact on Earth, Drive an Electric Car

The concept of recycling is not a new one. It was first introduced with the advent of the plastic bottle. Recycling has been a mainstay of subsistence societies for thousands of years and was an aspect of the thrift necessary to survive in an unpredictable world ruled by scarcities. The term “we use everything about the pig except the squeal” was a factual statement. Nothing was wasted; everything had a use.

Three events in history changed this viewpoint and opened the door to a throwaway society ruled by a “waste it” mentality. One was the introduction of mass production techniques by industrialists such as Henry Ford which helped remove scarcity from the equation, and made it possible for large numbers of people to own commodities manufactured in volume. Those same concepts applied to agriculture resulted in larger, more certain agricultural yields. The second was what could be called “The Chemical Revolution”, which has it’s origins in the early 19th century, the industrial application of which was made on a broad scale in the mid-20th century. Thus began the Age of Synthetics. Practical applications in the chemistry of substances gave us chemical fertilizers, nylon and polyester, revolutionized medicine and eventually led to the ubiquitous plastic bottle. The third event involved the employment of mass communication systems, newspapers, the beguiling radio and finally television. Entertainment fueled by advertising revenues ushered in the Marketing Age and Consumerism as a social philosophy was born. “Planned obsolescence” materialized as a means of maintaining the momentum of Consumerism.

The net result of these three events has been a wholesale re-configuration of raw materials into other things at a resource-busting rate. Simply stated this is the cycle of a waste-motivated society such as ours. The product, of course, is “waste”, which can be defined as substances or materials that no longer have a use.

It is not necessary to throw out the technological advances of the last century and a half to restore the true economy of this planet. In fact those same technologies which created the problem of waste are quite capable of resolving that same problem. The missing link is organization.

Every end product of our Throwaway Society can be recycled or put to further use. Soils, wood, ceramics, metals, plant debris and bio-wastes have been recycled throughout human history and, in fact, make up the vast majority of recyclable materials on this planet.

Paper, glass, textiles and plastics make up a more problematic category as they have undergone non-biological reconfiguration from their original form, but again are not beyond current knowledge and technological means to recycle for further use in our society. Recycled glass and paper are the best known applications of this sort of economy.

The most neglected and problematic to the aesthetics and health of our planet are the recovery of chemicals and of re-useable goods. The damage done by bad husbandry of the chemical by-products of industry is well-documented throughout recent history. Responsible chemical recovery policies at the industrial level and adequate recycling options at the consumer level answer the problem.

The environmental clutter and sheer mass of wholesale discard of re-useable goods such as household goods, clothing, electric mopeds, intact demolition debris, hybrid buses, building materials, computer equipment, hybrid cars, lighting fixtures, electric vehicles and other manufactured items begs the re-evaluation of wasteful manufacturing strategies such as planned obsolescence.

Strong resale markets that are themselves the product of depressed economic conditions extend the lifetime of existing commodities thus keeping them out of the waste stream. The degree of workability of this depends utterly on a change in the value given thrifty economic practices such as personal stewardship of one’s belongings.

The idea that the economy of the world depends utterly on the consumption of manufactured goods is the fundamental idea that precludes wholesale endorsement of recycling technologies as a viable economic activity. This fixed idea has done more than any other factor to make the problem of reusing and recycling the end products of our industrial world “unsolvable”. Making recycling economically viable may result in entirely new technological applications which will extend the lifetime of this civilization. It would be a terrible thing to have to throw this civilization away because it could not conceive of the usefulness of its own end products.

Hamas burns Tramadol painkillers smuggled into Gaza

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement in control of the Gaza Strip, has burned two million painkillers used as recreational drugs by Gazans.

The pills, called Tramadol, were confiscated from smugglers who bring them through tunnels across the Egyptian border.

The drug, a mild opioid, is taken by many who say it relaxes them.

But the drug is addictive and should only available from doctors by prescription, Hamas say.

Sacks of the pills were thrown into an incinerator in Gaza’s largest hospital.

Growing addiction

The United Nations in Gaza says many people are taking drugs because of the trauma and stress caused by a major military incursion by Israel last year.

Doctors in Gaza have been warning for some time of a growing addiction to painkillers, the BBC’s Jon Donnison in Jerusalem says.

Experts say addicts experience mild flu-like symptoms on withdrawal.

Gaza is under tight blockade by Egypt and Israel, tightened since the Hamas movement took control of the territory in 2007.

The tunnels are a conduit for badly-needed commercial goods, including food and medicine, but are also widely believed to be used for smuggling cash and weapons to Hamas.

Egypt, which helps maintain the blockade and opens its border with Gaza only occasionally, is reinforcing its Gaza border barrier with underground metal plates in an attempt to block the tunnels.

The UN and a number of international humanitarian groups warned in January that the blockade was putting residents’ health at risk, the UN and aid groups have warned.

Israel and Egypt deny entry to all but basic humanitarian supplies, in order to prevent Gaza’s Hamas rulers firing rockets at Israel, they say.

Wednesday in court, Scott Ray begged his victims for forgiveness and asked the judge to be lenient.
Ray pleaded guilty to breaking into homes in Campbell County and stealing prescription drugs to feed his addiction. He was also convicted in 2006 for committing the same crime, and because of the previous charge his 18 month sentence could’ve been 20 years.
Ray was caught on surveillance video last September sneaking into a neighbor’s home stealing bottles of Tramadol and Hydrocodone.
The owner of the home set up the camera because he says his pills had been disappearing for months. That victim also told the judge he wanted Ray to sit in a cell and see who he is- “a criminal who steals from people.”
Several character witnesses also testified on Ray’s behalf. One of those was former Liberty basketball coach Ritchie McKay who said he hired Ray as the LU chaplain because of his strong moral beliefs.
As part of his sentence, Ray must also pay nearly $2,000 in restitution.

Scottish public generally positive about controlling alien invasives, survey shows

When it comes to halting the spread of invasive non-native species, things can get a little unpleasant, and although researchers and policy makers are mindful of the evil necessity, the wider public can be less sympathetic. (For example, legal action in Italy once delayed a grey squirrel control program for so long that it was later abandoned: the population had since grown too large to make eradication feasible. Doh!). Education is crucial, yet surprisingly few soundings are taken of how people actually feel about control measures that can involve the sticky demise of cuddly little mammals. However, a recent questionnaire-based survey carried out by the University of Stirling’s Alison Bremner and Kirsty Park suggests that Scots people — older, better educated ones at least — are generally appreciative of the need to take active steps to protect native wildlife. The findings, published in Biological Conservation, support the idea that given sufficient information about a biological invasion, most people are okay about blamming aliens, even if pesticides and poisons aren’t exactly popular. Prophylactic Analgesia With Tramadol/Lorazepam Reduces Pain During …

VIENNA, Austria — April 21, 2010 — Combined prophylactic analgesia and anxiolytic treatment with tramadol plus lorazepam is significantly more effective than the use of diazepam alone for pain relief of patients undergoing percutaneous liver biopsy.
“We believe that percutaneous liver biopsy is still the gold standard for diagnosis and staging of liver diseases,” said Ella Veitsman, MD, Liver Unit, Rambam Healthcare Campus, Haifa, Israel, on April 17 here at the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL 2010).
However, there remains no consensus as to pain prevention and treatment for patients undergoing liver biopsy, and the present emphasis is turning to less invasive and less painful techniques. At the same time, analgesia before liver biopsy is usually avoided due to worries of masking pain that might be indicative of abdominal symptoms.
So to investigate ways of making this procedure more comfortable for the patient, the aim was to compare pain and anxiety levels for the use of 2 prophylactic treatment regimens.
In all, 113 patients were randomised to prophylactic analgesia with sublingual tramadol 50 mg plus oral lorazepam 1 mg (n = 56) or diazepam 5 mg (n = 57). Both treatments were administered 30 minutes prior to liver biopsy.
Patient pain and anxiety levels were determined upon dosing, and 30 minutes and 5 hours post biopsy. Pain was assessed according to a 10-point visual analogue scale (VAS), with anxiety measured according to the State Anxiety Inventory.
There was a significant reduction in pain levels at 30 minutes post biopsy in patients who received tramadol/lorazepam versus diazepam (P = .005).
In patients who received diazepam, 13.8% reported a high level of pain (VAS >7), compared with 3.6% of patients who received tramadol/lorazepam (P = .09).
There were no significant differences between groups for anxiety levels from 30 minutes prebiopsy to 6 hours post biopsy. However, significantly more patients in the tramadol/lorazepam group were willing to undergo recurrent liver biopsy than in the diazepam group (88% vs 6%; P = .002).

The New Generation of Smokers Prefer Electronic Cigarettes

Those of us who smoke have heard it many times before: “Hey, hey you! You can’t smoke in here. Put that nasty thing out or go outside!” Now there is an alternative to standing outside in the dead of winter enduring cold and social isolation. It looks like a cigarette; it dispenses nicotine, and even comes tobacco flavored. It is the electronic cigarette. There are several brands of electric cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, created to give people what they really need and crave – the sensation and feel of smoking; the taste and the hit. But e-cigs do it all without giving smokers what they don’t want – tar, chemicals, bad breath and discolored teeth, red eyes, smelly clothes — and they do so with a style and fashion that fits the modern lifestyle. No smoking cessation product has created the buzz that e-cigs have in years. It’s no wonder that so many people choose to buy e-cigarettes.

Some are calling e-cigarettes the cigarette of the future and the new generation is ushering it in. I say electronic cigarettes just make sense. Instead of delivering nicotine into the system on the tail of cancer causing carcinogens, tar, and additives found in traditional cigarettes that pollute our bodies and environments, electronic cigarettes are a battery powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by delivering a vaporized liquid nicotine solution. In addition to delivering inhaled nicotine, electric cigarettes provide a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke. How? E-cigs are designed with the latest microelectronic technology – a small rechargeable battery and a unique, replaceable e-cigarette cartridges containing water, propylene glycol, nicotine (or not) and exclusive flavorings. These are all contained in a membrane within the cartridge to suspend the ingredients and keep the solution fresh while stored. There are various nicotine levels available, including Full Flavored, Light, Ultra Light and Non-Nicotine. Inhaling on the electronic cigarette triggers the atomizing process that turns the liquid nicotine solutions into simulated smoke, which is actually a water vapor that evaporates harmlessly into the air within a few seconds and leaves no lingering smell or residue.

The benefits of “smoking” electronic cigarettes have been well established. Because there is no literal flame or smoke involved, those smoking bans no longer apply and social isolation is alleviated. The e-cigarettes contain no tar, tobacco (though you can have the nicotine solution tobacco flavored), ash or lingering unpleasant smell, making them a relatively healthy and environmentally acceptable alternative. Electronic cigarettes also look and feel just like a regular cigarette, but they are about 75% cheaper than their traditional tobacco counterparts. Far more cost-effective than traditional cigarettes, a flavor cartridge equals 10-15 cigarettes (depending on individual use).

With all of the e-cigarette brands available today, how can someone know which brand to buy? Well, reading http://www.ElectronicCigarettesReviews.net is a great place to start! Would you be better suited by buying disposable e-cigarettes? Should you purchase a brand such as Blu electronic cigarettes? Maybe you would prefer to try Cigana e-cigarettes? Maybe you should use the Green Smoke coupons or NJOY coupons to get your e-cigarettes at a discount so you can make sure you really do like smoking e-cigarettes? If you’ve been smoking tobacco cigarettes and are looking for a way to quit, you can’t go wrong with electronic cigarettes.

Kashmiri youth sceptical, angry: Wajahat Habibullah

Budgam, Apr 22: Government of Indias Chief Information Commissioner, Wajahat Habibullah, Thursday said that Kashmiri youth were angry and resorting to stone-pelting, as they were sceptical about the state government.
The problem in Kashmir is that the people here feel that New Delhi installs hand-picked governments in the state. The Government of India has committed mistakes on Kashmir (in the past), Wajahat said at a daylong seminar on Right to Information Act in this central Kashmir district.
Kashmiri youth are pelting stones. There is a need to know why they are doing so. They feel this government is not theirs. They have grievances about the functioning of the system, he said and added that if the angry youth could be made to realize that the government was listening to their grievances, may be they may not resort to stone pelting. Wajahat has, earlier, worked at different positions in the state
government as Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, and Deputy Commissioner in early 90s.
A 1968 batch Jammu and Kashmir cadre IAS officer is heading the Central Information Commission since October 2005 and is due to retire later this year. Earlier, he was tipped to be the Chief Information Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, but couldnt take up the responsibility as he was not relieved by the Centre.
Wajahat said he had felt the impact of the Act at the centre in past five years and that was the reason that he was intending to return to Kashmir.
The dark days have passed in Kashmir and future is waiting. We have to remove the bottlenecks to overcome the dark period for which implementation of the RTI is necessary. It was my dream but dreams often dont turn to be a reality. I am sad, he admitted candidly.
Wajahat was recently in the news for recommending name of the infamous government gunman, Ghulam Muhammad Mir alias Muma Kanna for Padma Shree award, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
The law, Wajahat said had more significance in JK, which has its own constitution, and was even stronger than the legislation implemented at the centre and some other states.
But it required setting up of the State Information Commission fully and setting up the Panchayat system in the state. Though the law has been implemented in the state but it is virtually defunct for want of the SCIC.
The District Development Commissioner, Muhammad Rafi said RTI act was not an enemy but friend of people and the government. The access to information related to government functioning would ultimately lead to peoples participation in the development works and ensure transparency in the system, Rafi said.
The RTI activists have right to seek information but it is not a forum to audit the government functionaries, the DC said.
The RTI movement Convenor, Dr Muzaffar Bhat said their aim was to spread awareness about the law under which the government functionaries were accountable before people.
RTI is the best tool to ensure transparency in the system, and strengthening of the institutions, he said.
Karen Jodha Fischer who is working on development of eco-tourism in the districts Khag area hoped that the government officials would work in tandem with RTI activists to address the grievances of people.

SPAR AT SEMINAR
Budgam, Apr 22: A verbal duel broke out between the RTI activists and the district administration including the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday at a seminar with former levelling the allegation that the government officials were not cooperating to provide information under the Right to Information Act.
The trouble began when an RTI activist, Ghulam Rasool Dar, who is also a government employee, while addressing the audience including various district officials alleged that they (officials) were not cooperating and should change their mindset as the law was now in vogue.
However the DC who was among the invitees interrupted Dar. Dont cross your limits. Dont dictate terms to us. You are a government employee (Assistant Surgeon, Health Department).
The officials and employees who were sitting among the audience came on the dais and started criticizing Dar. You are levelling allegations without proof. I would not tolerate it, the DC yelled. The commotion continued for almost 10 minutes after which Dar shared the dais with the DC. You are riding on two horses. Better choose one, the DC told Dar.

At China’s green show, questions emerge about electric cars

At China’s green show, questions emerge about electric cars

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

Beijing — From General Motors Co. to BYD Automobile Co., global and Chinese carmakers are promoting their electric cars and prototypes at China’s green-themed auto show, but executives are also voicing doubts here about the promise of this new clean technology.

At an industry conference on the eve of the Beijing show press preview, a Chinese auto executive today questioned the government’s strong push to promote plug-in hybrids and zero-emission electric cars.

China relies on coal to generate 83 percent of the country’s electricity, said Huang Xiangdong, vice president of Guangzhou Automobile Group Corp., a major Chinese carmaker that has ventures with Honda Motor Co. and other global players.

Because of China’s heavy use of coal to produce electricity, “battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids do not save more energy than conventional cars on a well-to-wheel analysis,” said Huang. “We think in China it’s not the right time to promote pure electric vehicles.”

Huang’s comments sparked a lively debate among auto industry executives, who are waiting for the central government to detail the subsidies and incentives it will offer to promote demand for electric cars. The government was expected to disclose them last month, but has postponed the announcement to July.

An executive at BYD Auto said the concerns about carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the way electricity is generated in China are valid –but he said that was not the only issue. “There are broader benefits of electric vehicles, such as reducing the dependence on foreign oil,” Henry Li, general manager of BYD’s auto export trade division, said at the Global Automotive Symposium in Beijing.

China’s oil imports are growing and likely to become enormous, driving up oil prices worldwide, if auto sales continue to expand at a brisk pace. China became the world’s largest auto market, overtaking the depressed U.S. market, after sales surged 51.6 percent.

Chinese auto sales are expected to grow a further 17 percent this year to 16 million cars and trucks, led by a 21.5 percent rise in passenger cars, Xu Changming, director of economic research and senior economist at the State Information Center, told the conference. Xu said tax breaks and other government incentives were underpinning demand by making vehicles affordable to a bigger segment of China’s huge population.

J.D. Power and Associates forecast today that sales of Chinese passenger vehicles — cars, SUVs and minivans — would grow to 13.55 million vehicles in 2015, a 55 percent increase over 2009 levels.

Concerned about rising oil imports and the pollution already choking China’s big cities, the central government has spurred automakers to develop clean, alternative technologies. Officials also believe that China’s fledgling carmakers will be able to compete better in new areas than in established fields where the big global automakers have decades of experience.

BYD, for instance, is viewed as a potentially promising automaker because it has a solid track record as a battery manufacturer — and battery technology is crucial to electric cars. BYD showed an electric sedan, the e6, at the Detroit auto show in January and plans to market the car in the United States and China before the end of the year. Li said BYD was still targeting a U.S. launch this year, probably on the West Coast.

The Beijing car show, formally known as Auto China 2010, is spotlighting electric cars and other so-called “new energy vehicles” with the slogan: “For a green tomorrow.” GM will unveil a Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept plug-in hybrid in Beijing, as well as display the Chevrolet Volt.

Nissan Motor Co. will display its battery-powered, all-electric Leaf car, which goes on sale this year in Japan and the United States.

Nissan may produce the Leaf and some of its components, including possibly the battery, in China, depending on what incentives the government unveils in July, said Shouichi Matsumoto, senior general manager for corporate planning at Nissan. “After the government’s announcement, we’ll form a plan,” he said.

The government has now designated 20 cities that will have charging infrastructure for electric cars, as part of its goal to have 500,000 new energy vehicles on the road in the next few years. Some auto executives said the government’s policy seems set, but it may be rethinking the timing and cost of electric car production.

In China, it’s not just the government that’s enthusiastic about electric cars, but Chinese consumers as well, said Brian Link, a consultant with Ernst & Young.

A recent survey it conducted found that 60 percent of Chinese respondents would buy or strongly consider an electric car. “That’s five times higher than in any other country” where the same survey has been conducted, Link said.

Involving Your Employees in the Human Resources Department

When it comes to saving both time and money for your business, it is important not to forget about the human resource department. This is one of the most important areas of your organization and one that has some of the most time consuming procedures. One of the ways to save both time and labor costs is to take some of the typical human resource tasks and give them to every employee in your organization. While this may seem like an impossible task, it is both easy and one of the best ways to relieve some of the pressure from your human resource department.

One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is by using human resource management software. This software will allow you to involve your employees with the more basic applications, such as updating addresses and phone numbers. It will also allow them to review any of the personnel reports, from absences to job reviews. These tasks are some of the smaller responsibilities of the human resource department which can easily be handed over to each individual employee without disrupting the flow of your organization.

While this is just one of the smaller tasks that can be completed with this type of software, it is the one that is the most visible. This type of software will also allow you to streamline your payroll and other human resource tasks without sacrificing efficiency or quality. There are many tasks that can be completed in minutes instead of hours, and others that will be done internally through this software. While there are many benefits when it comes to human resources software, there are also many security measures in place to ensure that all of your employees’ sensitive information can only be seen by authorized personnel.
